Lumber and Building Materials for Atlanta Area Remodeling Projects

(770) 995-3900
Whether it’s lumber for a deck or plywood for cabinets, we have the building materials you need! We have a wide selection of lumber, doors, windows and siding.

While pressure treated yellow pine is the most used material for new deck construction or renovation, cedar, cypress and composite lumber are more desirable for decking. The natural beauty and rot resistance of cedar makes it the ideal choices for decking in the Atlanta area.

In addition to building decks, cedar lumber is used for gazebos, pergolas and other outdoor structures. It is more stable than most other types of lumber, and tends to stay straight. You can create perfect outdoor living areas by adding cedar structures.

We stock cedar boards that are smooth on three sides, and rough one side in 1×4, 1×6, 1×8, 1×10 and 1×12.

We stock cedar in the following sizes:
2×2 Smooth Cedar Lumber
2×4 Rough and Smooth Cedar Lumber
2×6 Rough and Smooth Cedar Lumber
2×8 Rough and Smooth Cedar Lumber
2×10 Smooth Cedar Lumber
2×12 Smooth Cedar Lumber
4X4 Smooth Cedar Timbers

Larger timbers, such as 4×6, 4×12 and 6×6 and larger are available for special order purchases.

Composite decking requires little or no maintenance. In fact, some of the new composite woods carry a limited warranty against staining. Composites are a great choice for picnic table surfaces as well. Check out these new Trex Transcend colors, Spiced Rum and Lava Rock.

Spruce Lumber

Posted on June 18, 2011 by Reid Adams

Spruce lumber is an excellent choice for many interior and exterior projects in the Atlanta Athens Georgia area. Spruce is widely used for construction, and is a beautiful wood that cuts, nails, paints and stains well. While it does take weather well, it is not considered insect or rot resistant, so precautions must be taken to minimize deterioration.

Spruce is considered a softwood (a coniferous, or evergreen tree) in the family Picea. It is relatively light weight (has a low specific gravity) and has a high strength to weight ratio. The grain is typically straight and it has a uniform texture. Spruce tends to grow slowly, and the growth rings tend to be close together. There are about 35 species of spruce, some growing as tall as 200 feet. The oldest living tree is considered to be a spruce in Sweden that is estimated to be over 9,500 years old.

Spruce is typically used for structural framing, interior and exterior trim, and shelving. It can be used in making musical intruments, such as guitar and piano soundboards. It is more stable than most other types of lumber, and tends to stay straight.

Spruce is commonly used as decorative lumber, and is available in patterns such as edge and center bead with v-joint.

Spruce boards can be used for interior trim. Spruce typically has small, tight knots and once primed, spruce paints well. When stained, the tight knots can add a rustic look to rooms. Doors and windows can be trimmed using spruce boards instead of mouldings.

#2 and #3 SPF Framing Lumber are commonly used for studs, ceiling joists and rafters.

We stock spruce boards that are smooth on four sides in the following sizes:

1×4 #2 Raw & Primed Spruce Lumber
1×6 #2 Raw & Primed Spruce Lumber
1×8 #2 Raw & Primed Spruce Lumber
1×10 #2 Raw & Primed Spruce Lumber
1×12 #2 Raw & Primed Spruce Lumber
5/4×4-18’ Primed Spruce Lumber

S-P-F (Spruce-Pine-Fir) is stocked in the following dimensions:
#2 S-P-F Framing Lumber (2×4 8′-18′, 2×6 and 2×8 8′-24′)
#2 S-P-F Finger-Jointed Framing Lumber (2×6 & 2×8 up to 32’)
#3 S-P-F Framing Lumber (2×4, 2×6 & 2×8)

Personal Fall Arrest System

Posted on June 17, 2011 by Reid Adams

We have Fall Protection Kits (FPK) in stock

NEW OSHA SAFETY REGULATION
EFFECTIVE DATE: 12/16/2010
ENFORCEMENT DATE: 6/16/2011

With the issuance of this new directive, all residential construction employers must comply with 29 CFR 1926.501(b)(13). This means any business that is requiring it’s employees to work six feet or more above lower levels (such as going up on roofs) will be required by OSHA to use either the fall protection kit or have the net or guard rails.

Residential construction employers generally must ensure that employees working six feet or more above lower levels use guardrails, safety nets, or personal fall arrest systems. In many cases, personal fall arrest system is the most practical safety device. A personal fall arrest system may consist of a full body harness, a deceleration device, a lanyard, and an anchor point. (See the definition of “personal fall arrest system” in 29 CFR 1926.500).

Cedar Lumber

Posted on May 13, 2011 by Reid Adams

Western Red Cedar

Lumber

is an excellent choice for many projects in the Atlanta Athens Georgia area. Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insect infestation, and is truly a beautiful wood.

Western red cedar is considered a softwood (a coniferous, or evergreen tree).  It is light weight (low specific gravity) and has excellent insulating poperties.   The grain is typically straight and even.  When the wood comes from “old growth” trees that have grown slowly, the growth rings are very close together.  Growth rings are further apart in trees that have grown quickly.  It cuts and machines well, and glues tend to hold better than in more resinous woods.

Cedar is typically used for building decks, gazebos, pergolas and other outdoor structures. It is more stable than most other types of lumber, and tends to stay straight.  You can create perfect outdoor living areas by adding cedar structures.

Cedar is commonly used as a horizontal siding, and is available as beveled lap siding as well as other patterns.  It is also used in vertical applications, as board and batten siding, patterned boards such as “channel rustic”, and in 4×8 sheets as well.

Cedar boards can be used for interior trim. It really adds a warm, rustic look to rooms. Many homes have fireplace mantels made from 4×12 cedar. Doors and windows can be trimmed using cedar boards instead of mouldings.

Cedar is undoubtedly the first choice of wood for organic raised garden beds in our area. It has not been treated with chemicals, which makes it more attractive for beds where vegetables will be grown. Use cedar 2×2 frames above the beds to allow vining plants plenty of vertical space.

Cedar can also be used to build planter boxes, fences, and bird houses and feeders. Cedar is easy to cut, drill, and shape. Freshly cut cedar has a pleasant aroma.

Cedar shingles and shakes add a look of distinction when used as a roof or on a gable.

We stock cedar boards that are smooth on three sides, and rough one side in 1×4, 1×6, 1×8, 1×10 and 1×12.

We stock cedar in the following sizes:
2×2 Smooth Cedar Lumber
2×4 Rough and Smooth Cedar Lumber
2×6 Rough and Smooth Cedar Lumber
2×8 Rough and Smooth Cedar Lumber
2×10 Smooth Cedar Lumber
2×12 Smooth Cedar Lumber
4X4 Smooth Cedar Timbers

Larger timbers, such as 4×6, 4×12 and 6×6 and larger are available for special order purchases.

Use Interior Wood Mouldings to Beautify Your Home

Posted on May 06, 2011 by Reid Adams

By Reid Adams

Adding a finishing touch to a room, door or window is easy with decorative mouldings. Mouldings (or moldings) are generally long pieces of materials that have a decorative cross-section profile. The profiles are combinations of planes, angles, concave and convex surfaces. Mouldings can be made from wood, medium density fiberboard (MDF), composite lumber, plastic, rigid foam, plaster and even stone. Mouldings made from wood and wood fibers are the most readily available and least expensive. The lumber can come from softwood trees, such as pine and fir, or from hardwood trees such as maple, cherry and walnut. Hardwood mouldings are more expensive and are usually reserved for cabinetry and furniture and are generally stained rather than painted. The least expensive wood mouldings are made from MDF, wood fibers that have been combined with resins under pressure to form a material that can be shaped. MDF mouldings should not be used where there might be problems with moisture, such as a basement floor or in a bathroom. An excellent, inexpensive alternative to MDF is “fingerjointed” wood, short pieces that have been milled on the end with a profile that looks like interlaced fingers and glued together, then passed through a moulding machine to mill the finished profile. These joints can be seen if stained, so fingerjointed mouldings are usually painted.

Mouldings can serve multiple purposes. The primary use is to make a smooth, visually pleasing transition where surfaces of different angles or materials meet. Mouldings are decorative and can add beauty to a room, door, window or mantle. They can also be used to cover or hide imperfections, and to protect softer surfaces.

While there are thousands of profiles available, mouldings can be classified into just a few groups based on where they are primarily used in a room: ceilings, walls, floors, doors and windows. Ceiling mouldings are generally used at the top of a wall, where the ceiling and wall meet. The most common mouldings used here are the crown mouldings. There are hundreds of patterns of crown, and the combinations that can be used are virtually limitless. Baseboard and aprons can be used behind the top and bottom of a crown mold to extend its coverage and to make it look more massive. Crowns can be “built up” from two or more separate patterns, and other types of moulding can be added for different effects. Chair rails are used on the wall, at about the height of the top of a chair back. Although chair rails may be used for decoration, they actually get their name from protecting walls from damage caused by chairs being slid back. Chair rails can also be used to give a finished look to wainscoting, paneling that covers the bottom three to four feet of a wall. Picture moulding is typically used near the top of a wall, and got its name from when people used to hang pictures from it using picture wire and hooks. This was the best way to hang pictures in older homes with plaster walls, where it was impractical to use nails. Window and door mouldings such as casings are typically used to frame opening around windows and doors. You will usually find base mouldings at the “base” of a wall where it meets the floor. Base caps sit on top of a piece of square board, and gives the combination a more finished look. Shoe mold is used where the floor and base board meet, providing protection for the base board and covering any gaps between the base board and floor.
